Summer vacation is a great time to relax, unwind, and enjoy the sunny warm weather. You’ve probably been looking forward to your trip for months, so you should make the most of it by preventing any unwanted dental issues that could put a damper on your fun. Avoid bad breath or tooth troubles with these 5 summer oral health tips from your dentist in Florence.

Be Mindful of Carbonation

Carbonated drinks like soda and sparkling water are certainly tasty, and probably very abundant during summer vacation. There is nothing wrong with enjoying a few of these refreshing beverages during your trip, but be mindful of how much of them you drink.

Carbonated drinks contain an acid that can wear down your enamel. Dentin, the material that makes up your teeth, can start to erode when exposed to higher acidity levels. Soda and sports drinks have an especially high acid level, so try to limit these when you can.

Use Straws

If you do plan on drinking bubbly drinks, consider using a straw. They allow the acid in the beverages to bypass the teeth, decreasing the potential for erosion of the enamel. It’s also recommended that you finish your drink quickly instead of sipping it slowly over longer periods of time. This reduces the amount of contact your teeth have to the drink.

Reusable straws are a great option. Pack a few in your bag or purse so that you can have easy access when you need one.

Enjoy Tap Water

Did you know that tap water is typically fluoridated? This means it contains minerals that strengthen the enamel of your teeth, making them more resistant to tooth decay.

Fluoride is a natural mineral that is found in water, rocks, soil, and even the air. It actually remineralizes the surface of your teeth, which prevents cavities from developing. Sugar and refined carbohydrates are two major culprits for producing acid that eats away at the minerals on your teeth.

Consider skipping the bottled water from time to time and take a sip of the tap water.

Drink Tea

Tea is full of compounds that can suppress bacteria that grows in your mouth. In other words, it can help prevent gum disease and tooth decay. Of course, make sure you don’t add sugar. Additionally, drinking too much tea can stain your teeth, so don’t overindulge and wash it down with plenty of water to prevent tooth discoloration.

Stay Hydrated

Keep bad breath at bay and diminish your risk of cavities by drinking lots of water. Carry a bottle around with you and refill it frequently to stay hydrated and maintain healthier oral hygiene.

By following these simple tips, you’ll worry less about your mouth and spend more time having fun on your next summer vacation.
